"From Paul Marx on 10-Aug-2001
As they say, "any port in a storm". This FBO became my port for 4-5 hours while stuck between lines of thunder storms. The staff was pleasant enough and weather equipment was available to watch the lines go through as was the weather channel. We were given a ride to a local restaurant (JIMMY's--good food) and a phone number for taxi back ($7) when the FBO was about to close, but they were still there when we returned and they allowed us to use the faciities even though they were supposed to be closed. Very nice of them.

Dan,
Since you gave me my ICC I have filed IFR three times but the one I want to
tell you about was the last. On Wednesday evening I flew from Hanscom to
Pittsburgh International in a C-172 with another pilot. She flew down and I
flew back.
We were one of three sorties that delivered sensors (infra-red, I think)
manufactured in Lexington, MA and used in detectors for finding people
buried in rubble. These detectors are manufactured/assembled in Pittsburgh
and Louisville. New York City had lost over 200 of them when the towers
collapsed on the first respondents.
IFR clearances were required as well as coordination with other agencies so
that you didn't have an F-16 come up to visit you. It was a long lonely
flight. There is no one else in the air and the only time you heard from
the controllers was when they give you the altimeter setting at check-in and
a half hour later when they give you the frequency as they hand you off. It
was eerie. Towers would give you the runway you wanted and would taxi you
on runways. We got anything we wanted. Coming back to Massachusetts we
filed for 7000 but the winds were better at 9000 so we requested that just
as they cleared us to 7. The response was instantaneous. We were told to
climb and maintain 9000. Since the controllers function is traffic
separation and there was no traffic...
Thanks for your patience with me and getting me back up to speed. I feel it
really paid off.
